Summary: The collection consists of copies of John Steele’s financial records as Marine Hospital Agent in Philadelphia from 1808 – 1812. Submitted quarterly to the Treasury Department, the records include itemized patient lists from Pennsylvania Hospital, vouchers from the Board of Health for sailors cared for at the Lazaretto (including one African-American seaman in 1810), an itemized account of all expenses, and correspondence from the Treasury Department related to adjustments made to the account. There is also a letter to Albert Gallatin from a tavern keeper seeking payment after caring for a sailor with smallpox in 1811.
