Summary: Donnelly was born in Philadelphia, the son of an immigrant from Fintona, County Tyrone, Ireland and a second generation Irish-American mother. He was admitted to the bar in 1853 and entered politics in 1855. In 1857 he and his wife, Katharine McCaffrey, moved to Nininger, Minnesota. Donnelly had helped locate the townsite, which would remain his home, and organize an immigrant aid association to settle it. He joined the Republican Party in Minnesota and was elected lieutenant governor (1859-1863) and then to the U.S. Congress (1863-1868). Beginning in the 1870s he became involved in the agrarian reform movement, affiliating with the Grange and a succession of political parties, including the Anti-Monopoly, Greenback Labor, Alliance-Labor, and People's parties, and served several terms in the state legislature. A writer of both fiction and non-fiction, he published two short-lived reform-oriented newspapers. The collection includes correspondence and miscellaneous papers, literary materials, volumes and pamphlets, and scrapbook materials. The original documents are in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society. Register available.
