Summary: The Loyal Orange Institution originated in Ireland in 1795. The first American chapters were organized by 1867. The society was founded on the principles of Protestantism, patriotism, and the separation of church and state. Membership was restricted to Protestant males eighteen years of age and older, who professed a life of temperance. Originally a secret fraternal society, the organization has undertaken philanthropic activities as well. This lodge was formed in 1872. The collection contains an almost complete run of minutes from 1885 to 1986. Other records are sparse and scattered and include correspondence, and financial and membership records.
