Lawrence Johnson (1801-1860), a printer, left England and settled in Philadelphia in 1823, where he co-founded a type and stereotype foundry. Mary Winder of Lower Makefield, Bucks County, in 1837. The couple had ten children, among whom was Robert Winder Johnson (1854-1910). He worked for his brother's local trading house, Lawrence Johnson and Company, as well as for the Abrasive Materials Company (later the Abrasive Company), which was established in Philadelphia's Wissinoming neighborhood in 1893.
In this donation are three volumes relating to the Johnson family. They include: a scrapbook of letters and clippings collected by Mary Winder Johnson on the death of her husband, Lawrence Johnson; a scrapbook of clippings relating to the families and acquaintances of Robert Winder Johnson and his wife, Rosalie Morris Johnson (died 1908); and a 1910 memorial book from the Abrasive Materials Company on the death of Robert Winder Johnson. |
