Summary: Clifton Wharton (1839-1922) descended from Lieutenant Colonel Franklin Wharton (1767-1818) and Mary Clifton Wharton (died 1813) of Philadelphia. A member of Wharton Bros., owners of an iron rolling mill plant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Clifton lived much of his life in that city. He married Jane Elizabeth Page in 1863 and together had six surviving children, and he died in Plainfield, New Jersey. This small collection consists of mostly mid to late 19th century letters from Clifton and other family members, along with an assortment of family photographs from the same timeframe, some of which are identified. There are also genealogical writings, such as that on Clifton Wharton, the Ormsby family of Pittsburgh, and the McCrea and Hanna families of Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey; a report card of Mary A. Page from the Steubenville Female Seminary in Ohio, 1844; a copy of "First Report, Address and Proceedings of the Pittsburgh Sanitary Commission, February 1863;" and miscellaneous clippings, poems, and notes.
