Summary: This scrapbook contains newspaper clipping pertaining to the Soviet Union in the years immediately following the conclusion of World War II. It opens with a series of articles regarding Soviet censorship of some of its notable composers for producing “bourgeois” music as well as the USSR’s resistance to jazz music. The centerpiece is an extended travelogue of the USSR written by John Steinbeck and accompanied by photographs by Robert Capa. Steinbeck notes conversations that he had with Soviet citizens as well as his thoughts on their food and drink. It also features an account of the celebration of the 800th anniversary of Moscow’s founding and, his visit to Stalin’s birthplace. This is followed by a collection of articles on various diplomatic confrontations between the US and USSR that mark the genesis of the Cold War. These include clashes over U.S. Aid to East Berlin and Iran, escalating tension in China and Korea and even, the causes of World War II. This collection concludes with a few political cartoons related to these diplomatic tensions.
