Summary: This donation consists of a large group of manuscripts, circa 1828 -1850, relating to the estate of Philadelphia brickmaker Thomas Coates and family business matters. The family owned considerable real estate and retained Philadelphia lawyer, Henry Penington as trustee and estate manager. There is also a variety of manuscript letters from members of old Philadelphia families – Cadwallader, Wharton, Parrish, etc. – as well as manuscript vellum deeds, property and estate legal documents, related bills, receipts, disbursements, affidavits, and an 1830 estate inventory. Other material includes a folder of assorted correspondence relating to other legal matters and cases handled by Henry Pennington, with a few early items relating to Philadelphia sugar refiner, Edward Penington and Mrs. Bowen, widow of a Jamaican plantation owner. Further, there is a large group of similar materials, circa 1850 -1940 (mostly pre-1920), relating to the following inter-related Philadelphia families: Stevenson, Large, Easby – all mostly of the local business class. There are personal and interfamilial correspondence including several 1880’s letters from Europe, an architectural contract for a Large family commercial building on Delaware Avenue, documents regarding the Easby sugar refinery, photographs, legal documents, and ephemera.
