Summary: Initially led by Josiah White and backed by leading Philadelphia financiers, this company was chartered in 1815 to improve river navigation, especially for the easier transport of anthracite coal from Schuylkill County to Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore. The company constructed an intricate system of canals, dams, and locks, and in the early 1840s made extensive improvements in an attempt to compete with the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. The volumes record payments of specified sums to named individuals for construction contracts, bridge building, equipment, legal work, employee salaries, printing, advertising, stock subscription work, property taxes, etc.
