Jacob W. Shoemaker descended from a family of Shoemakers that migrated from Virginia to Western Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. He was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, to George Shoemaker and Lydia Newcomer. In 1866, he married Rachel Hinkle of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, Jacob served with Company H, 58th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and he later founded the National School of Elocution and Oratory in Philadelphia. He died in Kansas in 1880.
