Summary: The Courtland Saunders Post No. 21 was a unit of the Grand Army of the Republic, which was a fraternal organization comprised of men who had served in the Union forces during the Civil War. The GAR served as a social and advocacy organization for veterans. It survived into the twentieth century, and its legacy was carried on by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Volumes 1-3 in this collection contain personal reflections of Civil War veterans who were members of the Courtland Saunders Post in Philadelphia. The depth of description of each soldier's experience varies from basic enlistment information to nuanced accounts of service and battles. Some of these accounts offer extremely personal details, including their capture by Confederate troops, campaigns in which they participated, and men with whom they served. In addition to descriptions of service, these volumes also document the deaths and funeral services of members of the post. Volume 4 contains a list of people who took the oath of allegiance to the United States in Bridgeport, Alabama, 1863-1864, as well as a report of the operations of the 2nd Division, 12th Army Corps, U.S. Army, from April 27 to July 26, 1863. Volume 5 contains an index of veterans listed in volumes 1-3.
