Summary: The photograph depicts men gathering around an office building during the early construction of the Hog Island shipyard. In 1917, the United States federal government hired American International Shipbuilding Corporation to build and operate the largest shipyard in the world at Hog Island as part of the efforts during World War I. The Hog Island shipyard workers built 122 ships within a four-year span before Hog Island was closed in 1921 and quickly demolished. None of the ships built at Hog Island were ever deployed during World War I, but were later used during World War II.
