Papers collected by Ferdinand J. Dreer relating to abolitionist John Brown. In October of 1859 Brown and a group of followers raided the United States Arsenal at Harpers Ferry in an attempt to incite an armed slave rebellion. After three days, his forces were overtaken and Brown was arrested. He was hanged after being found guilty of murder, inciting a slave insurrection, and treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia. This volume contains documents pertaining to this series of events, including letters, a family history, a note from Frederick Douglass, coded letters, transcripts of speeches, legal correspondence, a war song, potraits, a copy of "A Declaration of Liberty, By the Representatives of the Slave Population of the United States of America," as well as other documents. |
