description This digital record contains eight images that depict three letters written by Margaret Clarke Greene to Christine Williams Biddle. Christine Williams Biddle (1780&ndash;1861) was the wife of Thomas Alexander Biddle (1776&ndash;1857), the son of American Revolutionary war soldier Clement Biddle (1740&ndash;1814). Margaret Clark Greene (1798-1861) was from a prominent Highland Scots family. Her father was Captain Alexander Clark, Royal Marines. Her mother was Margaret Shaw. In 1843, her sister Isabella married John A. Macdonald (later Sir), who became the first Prime Minister of Canada. Margaret had no settled home, living at one time or another in the Highlands, the Isle of Man, Liverpool, Philadelphia, New York City, New Haven, East Greenwich, RI;&nbsp;Burlington, NJ;&nbsp;Savannah, Cumberland Is., and elsewhere in GA. In 1822 she married John Ward Greene, a nephew of General Nathanael Greene. Less than three months later he&nbsp;died of illness. Never remarrying, Margaret became the close companion of Louisa Greene Shaw, a daughter of Nathanael Greene.<br /> <br /> These letters are held, along with others, in folder 17 (box 6) titled &quot;Christine Williams Biddle Correspondence, 1838 (January-May),&quot; of the Biddle family collection.
