Summary: Portrait of Samuel Powel (1738-1793), who served as Mayor of Philadelphia from 1775-76 and 1789-90.  Powel graduated from the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania) in 1759 and was an early member of the American Philosophical Society, as well as a trustee of the College of Philadelphia.  Powel died in September 1793 during Philadelphia's Yellow Fever epidemic and was interred at Christ Church Burial Ground.
