Many images document air raid drills and blackouts in Philadelphia, especially as observed on Market Street, Broad Street, and in the subway station. Shows people going into shelters and standing close to stores during alerts until the all clear is sounded. Includes images of children during drills in the schools. Portrays members of civil defense during Defense Week, with scenes of the Unity Day Parade and a pageant. Contins images of air shows at Wings Field in Ambler and at Northeast Airport. Documents activities at the Information Center with views of watchers (mostly women and American Legion members) as they work on telephones, at lookouts, and at the operations board. Portrays workers taking a secrecy oath and accepting awards. Also shows pilots consulting maps at the center and preparing to intercept airplanes when necessary. Other items show air raid police as they are sworn in and defense workers distributing cigarteets. Includes an anti- aircraft demonstration at Municipal Stadium, the df198th Coast Artillery setting up tents near the Stadium before maneuvers, and the Pennsylvania Defense Corps during a mock invasion. Also contains views of a scrap drive in Chester County for Waster Conservation, the closing of the O.P.A., and office activities at the War Production Board.
