Van Braam Houckgeest worked for the Dutch East India Company in Macao and Canton, China for a number of years before being appointed consul to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia in 1783. While a resident of Charleston, S.C., he purchased property and operated a general supply house on 41 Bay Street. Sometime in 1790, he moved his family back to Holland.
