Summary: Kirk Petshek received his Ph.D. from Harvard (Economics) in 1947. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Petshek worked for the U. S. Department of Labor as the Branch Chief in the Bureau of Labor Statistics (1951-1954). In 1954, Petshek became an employee of the Philadelphia city government, eventually becoming the Urban Development and Economic Coordinator in the Office of the Mayor. He resigned his post in 1962 to accept a position as a professor of Urban Affairs at the University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee), and remained there until his death. Published as The Challenger of Urban Reform: Policies and Programs in Philadelphia (Philadelphia, 1973).
