Summary: Charles Mervine was a sailor with the U. S. Navy. This volume is a diary kept by Mervine while aboard the U. S. S. Powhatan, 1862-1864. Mervine's accounts of daily life on the ship include detailed descriptions of the duties sailors performed; discussions of problems on the ship and repairs made to the Powhatan; details about ships sailing in the same vicinity; and the deaths of numerous sailors. He writes about the battles that the Powhatan is involved in, and notes the fall of Fort Sumter, among other significant events. Mervine also writes about the his travels through the Caribbean, describes the landscape, weather, buildings, and his general impressions of each port. He is especially candid about some of his observations of the native people of each island, and includes discussions about some of the politics on the islands.
