Jacob Eichholtz was a Lancaster County portrait, landscape, and historical painter. Eichholtz began doing profile portraits around 1805, and continued to do them throughout his career, "but employed this format far less frequently after 1810." "In 1811, Eichholtz visited the painter Gilbert Stuart in Boston, and began to exhibit with the Society of Artists at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he continued to exhibit until his death. . . By 1821, he was working in Philadelphia, where he lived for ten years before returning to Lancaster in 1832," where he remained until his death in 1842. This daybook contains entries for 93 portraits painted, as well as memoranda regarding famous artists.
