In 1902, Peter A. B. Widener established the Widener Memorial School at Broad and Olney streets, Philadelphia, for children with physical disabilities. Formally opening in 1906, the school was run by its trustees until they settled into an agreement with the Philadelphia Board of Education in 1941. The Broad and Olney facilities were replaced and later reopened in 1953. This small collection of material is comprised of: two 8 x 10 black and white photograph of students of Room 14, 1957 and 1958; an 8 x 10 black and white photograph of members of United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia; a 1962-1963 newsletter of the Widener Memorial Home and School Association; an undated informational sheet on the school titled "A Modern Concept of a Modern School; and a large-format information booklet on the school published in 1962. Noted in the photographs is one Georgina Elizabeth Minter of Philadelphia. The name Ruth Barber also appears on a couple items. |
