Summary: In this donation are groupings of 18th and 19th century legal documents -- deeds, briefs of title, searches, and other items -- pertaining to property at 260 South 18th Street in Philadelphia, as well as land in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The Northampton County materials date from the 1780s and 1790's. The 18th Street papers date from 1801 to 1869. In the 20th century, this was the site of O. E. Mertz and Company, the business of interior designer Oscar Ernest Mertz, Sr. Additionally, there is one miscellaneous document in the collection from 1785 that describes an extensive plot of land in Virginia (now West Virginia) between the Little Kanawha and Monongahela rivers.
