Carlin worked at Wanamaker’s department store in his youth and later took an active interest in efforts to restore the Jacob Graff House (also called the Declaration House), where Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, at 7th and Market streets in Philadelphia. The Graff house was demolished in 1883, but was eventually rebuilt in 1975. In 1963, when Carlin noticed the historical marker denoting the Graff House was gone, he went to the city government to have the sign reinstated. Many of the clippings in the scrapbook discuss his efforts concerning the sign. There are also clippings that discuss earlier federal efforts to have the land turned into a national historic site. Additionally, there are numerous clippings on Thomas Jefferson, as well as several pieces of Carlin’s correspondence with city officials. | ||
