Summary: The records for the Second Baptist Church of Philadelphia cover the entire time the church was in operation, from its founding in 1803 to 1972. The records themselves document all the operational aspects of the church and the Sunday school programs. Consisting of 13 boxes and 109 volumes, the collection is organized into the following series: "I. Church organization," "II. Outgoing correspondence," "III. Incoming correspondence," "IV. Legal matters," "V. Financial matters," "VI. Receipts, invoices and bills," "VII. Church architecture," "VIII. Broadsides and printed material," the "IX. Lord's Day School," "X. Women's activities, missions, Hope league and King's Daughters," "XI. Photographs, portraits and snapshots," and "XII. Books and records (bound)." The "Books and records" series contains member lists, roll books, meeting minutes, and financial records bound in volumes. There does not appear to be any significant gaps in the collection. The collection provides an excellent source of information on a Baptist Church in Philadelphia over a period of 169 years. Researchers will find a small amount of genealogical data in the first series, "Church organization."
The Second Baptist Church of Philadelphia was established on February 14, 1803, when the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia presented ten men and ten women a public letter giving approbation to their request to start an independent church. It was first located on New Market Street then moved to a new building in 1875 on Seventh Street below Girard Avenue. The records for the Second Baptist Church of Philadelphia covers the entire time the church was in operation, from its founding in 1803 to 1972. The records themselves cover all the operational aspects of the church and the Sunday school programs. There is also a small amount of genealogical material covering from 1803 to 1968.
