| 520 | |a Thomas McKean (1734-1817), an early advocate of revolution, was a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress and the Continental Congress. He also was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, chief justice of Pennsylvania, president of Congress, president of Delaware, chairman of the board of trustees of the University of the State of Pennsylvania (now the University of Pennsylvania), and governor of Pennsylvania. He remained a significant figure in Pennsylvania and Delaware politics from the late 1750s until he left the Pennsylvania governorship in 1808. This collection consists primarily of correspondence and includes many exchanges between McKean and well-known leaders of the period, including George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. Also included is McKean’s correspondence with his family, particularly his second wife, Sarah McKean, and one of his sons, Thomas McKean Jr. In addition, the collection holds some of the correspondence of Thomas McKean Jr. and other family members in the decades after Thomas McKean’s death. Beyond correspondence, the collection holds official documents such as military and civilian commissions, books, pamphlets, and receipts. | ||
