Summary:	This folder contains former volume 5, pages 1 to 60 of the extra illustrated version of John Galt's The Life, Studies and Works of Benjamin West. It contains one original drawing titled The Tragic Muse, West's letter to George Beaumont proposing a monument to commemorate the British victory at Waterloo, letters and addresses to and from West concerning the affairs of the Royal Academy of Art of which West was the President, and prints of notable contemporaries and influential historical figures. The Tragic Muse dates to 1776 and the bulk of other material dates between 1800 and 1820. Oversize pages are in box 3, folder 6. This folder contains two letters from West to King George III inquiring about the West Window of St. George's Chapel for which West designed a depiction of the Crucifixion. One letter is dated 1808. Charles Forrest was the glass painter commissioned to execute the project, but after Forrest's death in 1807 the Crucifixion scene was never completed. This window painting was the last commission West received from the King. John Galt wrote two volumes covering the life of Benjamin West. The first was published in 1816 and contains biographical information from West’s birth to his travels in Italy in the 1760s. The second volume contains West’s move to London and his subsequent career as historical painter to King George III, and ends with West’s death in 1820.
