William Moore Smith , 1759-1821, was the eldest son of William Smith, first Provost of the University of Pennsylvania. Smith studied law at the University and was later the General Agent for British Claims in America, as provided for under the sixth article of Jay's Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Amity, which allowed for compensation to British creditors for debts "still owed to them by U.S. citizens" incurred before the Peace.
Volume one contains Smith's handwritten copy of "Correspondence between the Commissioners under the 6th articles of the Treaty of Amity,- on the Secession of the American Commissioners. 1799."
Volume two contains published and handwritten copies of proceedings , including "The Claim and Answer, in the case of William Cunningham and Co. against the United States; under the 6th article of the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation, Between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America. (Printed John Fenno, Philadelphia (Pa.), 1798), "Observations on the part the United States by their Agent on the Reply of Daniel Dulany", undated, and other cases involving Loyalist claims.
Volume three contains the claim of Edward Putnam. Answer of the agent of the United States and Massachusetts claims. Also the claim and subsequent proceedings in the cases of the Rev. Charles Inglis (Bishop of Nova Scotia), Andrew Allen of Pennsylvania, and Cavalier Jouett of New York. Smith was General Agent in at least one of these cases. |
