Summary: This studio portrait of Russell H. Conwell, Jr. (1843-1925) was taken by noted Philadelphia photographer Frederick Gutekunst (1831-1917). The law, journalism and the Baptist minstry were careers pursued by Conwell. While a minister, he was asked to instruct a young man. This tutorial turned into a life's mission leading Conwell to establish Temple College in 1884. In 1907 the school incorporated, operating as it does today as Temple University. Conwell served as its president until his death. He also founded the Samaritan (now Temple University) Hospital.
