Summary: Image: 1/6 plate; Woman wearing a dark silk moiré gown, probably black, buttoned down the front, with wide belled sleeves trimmed with velvet ribbonand sheer white flared undersleeves and wide whitework collar; she wears a brooch at her throat and a chain at her waist, with her center parted hair in ringlets that cover her ears; color applied to her cheeks, chin and lips. Preserver: Straight, narrow, embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a common "Thistle Motif" design [Plate 119 page 115 of "American Miniature Case Art" by Floyd and Marion Rinhart (Cranbury, New Jersey: A. S. Barnes and Co., Inc., 1969)] on both sides, with gilded patterned trim on both exterior and interior, with a red velvet pinchpad, and a red velvet cushion embossed with a geometric design (ca.1850).
