Summary: The Stephen A. Beckwith (1837-1903) pocket diary for the year 1863.  Mr. Beckwith was a sergeant in Company H, 37th New York Volunteers. While in service from 1861 to 1863, he participated in the first battle of Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, and the battle of Chancellorsville, among others.  In the diary, Mr. Beckwith writes about the weather; mail received and sent; orders received (for movements, picket duty, to go to headquarters, drills);  knapsack and brigade inspections; enemy activity; visitors from other units; a "bargain" he made with a colleague to not drink whisky while in service; and accounts and payments.  In the back of the diary he also included the lyrics to a popular song at the time entitled "Kitty Wells."
The diary was produced by Willy Wallach, No. 43 John Street in New York.  The diary includes a list of Sundays, an almanac for 1863 with phases of the moon, rates of postage, and eclipses in 1863 as well as space for memoranda and accounts.  It is in excellent condition.
Blank pages in the diary were not imaged.  These include: January 2 to 12; January 14 to 18; February 13; March 22 to 26; May 11 to 12; May 14 to 19; May 21 to July 1; July 3 to 24; July 26 to September 25; September 27 to October 16; October 22 to November 2; November 4 to 25; November 27; November 29 to December 6; December 8 to 18; December 20 to 21; December 23; December 25 to 26; December 28 to 30.
