Photograph of Civil War general George Gordon Meade. Born in Spain to Philadelphia merchant Richard W. Meade and Margaret Coates Meade, George Gordon Meade (1815-1872) became a decorated and respected military official. Meade spent his formative years in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. After graduating from West Point in 1835, he was briefly stationed in Florida. Meade served as a ranking officer in several conflicts, including the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848, and the American Civil War, 1861-1865, during which he served as commanded of the Army of the Potomac. In addition to his military service, Meade also helped construct several lighthouses along the coasts of New York, New Jersey, and Florida. |
