Campaign handbill for Richardson Dilworth in the 1947 mayoral race. Dilworth was defeated by over 90,000 votes in the 1947 race. Despite his defeat, Dilworth went on to serve the city of Philadelphia on many different platforms. In 1949 he was elected City Treasurer, in 1951 he was elected the Philadelphia District Attorney, and in the 1955 mayoral race Dilworth was elected mayor of Philadelphia. Dilworth resigned as Mayor on February 12, 1962 to run for Governor of Pennsylvania, a race that he lost. After running for the governorship, Dilworth went on to resume practice as a lawyer in the law firm Dilworth Paxson LLP and later served as president of the Philadelphia School Board. |
