520 |a The journal of Daniel H. Emerson contains detailed accounts of his life and work as a minister in the Presbyterian church in Northborough, MA; East Whiteland, PA; York, PA; and Saint George's, DE. Emerson was heavily involved in the temperance movement, and in the anti-slavery movment in Massachusetts. He became president of the newly formed Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society in 1837, and served in the organization until he moved to Pennsylvania in 1840. His journal contains accounts of the meetings of the temperance and anti-slavery organizations to which Emerson belonged, as well as descriptions of his sermons, the rites he performed as a minister, his family life, the births and deaths of his children, and national events. One such event is the murder of the abolitionist Reverend Elijah P. Lovejoy in Alton, IL. He also describes missionary work being done in association with the Presbyterian church.  |b The journal also includes lists of marriages, baptisms, and funerals Emerson performed while serving as a Congregational and Presbyterian minister in Northborough, MA, 1836-1840; East Whiteland, Chester County, PA, 1841-1845; York, PA, 1846-1855; and Saint George's, DE, 1855-1861. In addition to these lists, the center section of the journal contains account records documenting expenditures and receipts during Emerson's service at Saint George's parish. The journal also contains a description of the death and funeral of Daniel H. Emerson in an unknown hand.
