N1 - Harry Bridges was born Alfred Bryant Renton Bridges, in Melbourne, Australia, and immigrated to the United States in 1920. He was active in the International Longshoremen's Association and in 1937 led the West Coast members out of the American Federation of Labor to form the International Longshoremen's Union in the Congress of Industrial Organizations. Bridges' militantcy, especially during World War II, led to unsuccessful attempts by the United States government between 1937 and 1955 to deport him as a communist. ER -
