Summary: This volume was originally published in 1859 to honor the memories of prominent Philadelphians that had passed away. The volume was then reprinted in 1890 in an extra-illustrated form, adding portraits and autograph letters of the men memorialized in the book. Simpson, a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, edited the volumes. Entries for each individual were written by their contemporaries. There are also excerpts taken from John F. Watson's "Annals of Philadelphia." Some of the portraits are engraved by John and Samuel Sartain.
