Summary: |
Friederich Hintz (Hinz), a carpenter, was born in Poland and came to the United States 1853 from Konigsberg, Germany. He lived in East Cambridge and Roxborough, Massachusetts. In 1856 his wife Maria and their three daughters joined him. They later settled in New Ulm, Minnesota. The collection contains correspondence between Hintz and his wife before their reunion in America. His letters describe his voyage and living conditions in the United States. Included are his descriptions of work as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, hard times, and American politics. Letters from Maria's family discuss conditions in the old country. Also included are passports, a vaccination certificate, papers relating to Hintz's professional qualifications and experience, and to the purchase of property in New Ulm, and other personal items. English translations are available for some of the correspondence. |
