The volume focuses primarily on John Ross of Philadelphia, a merchant who had been authorized by the Committee of Commerce to procure supplies for the use of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The debt he contracted in performing the service brought about a correspondence with Benjamin Franklin which is copied here together with a letter of Benjamin Franklin to John Jay (copy).
