Summary: |
Mendenhall & Cope were Philadelphia merchants. As indicated throughout this collection, although most of their business transactions were joint, others were conducted under Thomas P. Cope. This collection contains a sales book, 1789-1792, that records numerous sales of fabrics, such as linen, bleached cotton, purple stripe cotton and jeans. Other records within this volume record sales of merchandise on account of several different concerns from Dublin. These, too, appear to be mostly cloth goods, such as black and red linen, mock chintz and china blue handkerchiefs. In addition to sales, bills of purchase for two North Carolina businesses are listed, c. 1800. There are also two journals, 1789-1790 and 1790-1792, with pages consecutively numbered. In addition to fabrics, other dry goods noted in these volumes include women's combs and buttons. A much later volume, believed to have belonged to Thomas P. Cope, reflects a completely different line of merchandise. The volume is a sales journal, 1836-1844, and records the weekly/biweekly sales and repairs of gold and silver items, such as silver spoons, rattles, watches, music boxes and pencils. |
