The letters, 1788-1796, are mostly to his father, who was a carpenter in Scotland, and concern passage to America, life as an apprentice printer, a publishing business venture, and his decision to return to Scotland. The letterbook continues with notes, 1800-1807, on sermons and brushes with death. There is also a typescript copy of the letterbook.
