Inscribed "Philip Vessey," the postcard album in this donation contains eighty-four postcard Vessey received and collected in the early 1900s. They are a mix of black and white, tinted, and color cards, and most of them show Philadelphia scenes and landmarks. Those that don't have images from Willow Grove (amusement) Park and New Jersey shore towns, such as Wildwood, Holly Beach, and Atlantic City. There are also two German postcards featuring animals, another German postcard with a birthday greeting, and American card of a native American family titled "Julian Buck & Family-Utes." Along with the postcard album is a booklet of color prints of Philadelphia buildings titled Autochrome Views of Philadelphia by Buehler and Williams (1900).
Philip Vessey (1892-1980) was born in England to Frederick Charles Vessey (1862-1948) and Mary Helen Martin (1861-1935). They had several children in England and emigrated from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1897. Philip worked as for Dienalt and Eisenhart, which manufactured blacksmithing machinery and tools. He married English immigrant Sara Beatrice Haynes (1882-1963) in 1915. |
