John Mahoney of Philadelphia for a photographer for Hog Island Shipyard in the early 20th century. He attended the Drexel Institute of Technology, and in 1926, he established the Mahoney Construction Company with his brother Edwin in Pleasantville, New Jersey. They expanded their business to Margate and worked on home along the Jersey Shore and the Main Line outside of Philadelphia.
In this donation are donation are sixteen photographs of various sizes (most are 8x10), black and white), fourteen of which show activities at Hog Island between 1917-1919. A number of them show ships being built, but there are also images of its barracks, switchboard operators, displaced workers, progress made on its 4th Liberty Loan campaign, lines outside its canteen, public transportation, and road construction. Most of these photos are labeled either verso or recto. There is also a photograph of the SS Saguache, which was built at Hog Island, passing through the Panama Canal, and a colored photograph of a cartoon depicting Uncle Sam welcoming various Hog Island ships from its wet basin.
