A. Edward Newton (1864-1940) was a prominent book collector from Philadelphia. In this donation are a number of Newton's privately printed manuscripts, along with a cards, a printed lecture, and one type-written letter. Newtown sent these items from his "Oak Knoll" residence in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, to Robert Beattie in Philadelphia. (One item is addressed to James Beattie, also in Philadelphia.) His missives range from essays about famous figure to stories of his life.
Two items in the donation date from after Newtown's death. They are two cards (1955 and 1961) addressed from the family of Newton's son, E. Swift Newton, in Anselma, Pennsylvania, to Robert Beattie in Overbrook, Pennsylvania. |
