Summary: Alphons (or Alphonse) Robert Schmidt was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1844. He immigrated to the United States in 1866 with a background in naval architecture and engineering. He worked in New York as a draughtsman, but he eventually moved to Philadelphia where he formed the A. R. Schmidt & Co., Insurance Inspections at 416-20 Walnut Street. Schmidt married twice, the second time to Frances Clopper Witcraft of Delair, New Jersey, where Schmidt had a home. The couple was married in 1908, lived in Delair, and had four daughters. Schmidt died in June 1934. This collection contains papers of A. Robert Schmidt, as well as some of his parents and of his wife Frances. There are original vital records clippings and articles, business and personal letters, architectural drawings, a few financial papers, a ledger, miscellaneous artifacts, and other documents. In addition, there are genealogical notes on the family that were created by the donor and three copies of the newsletter "Fulgham-Fulghum Family Facts."
