During the Civil War, Jacob served with Company H, 58th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and he later founded the National School of Elocution and Oratory in Philadelphia. He died in Kansas in 1880. This diary dates from just after the Civil War when Jacob was the superintendent of schools for the Freedmen's Association in Virginia.
