Portrait of Charles Elmer Hires. A pharmacist from Philadelphia, Hires was the first person to brew root beer commercially. Hires’ Root Beer was introduced at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial exhibition. By 1890, the Charles E Hires Company was established and selling root beer.  |
