The first letter from Samuel Hanson, Naval purser, to Thomas Jefferson, explains the formation of a rogue association within the Volunteer Rifle militia, who called themselves the "Tar Militia.” This rogue group planned on tarring and feathering another militiaman, who happened to be born in England, under the auspices that he was a “monarchist.” The second letter, from Jefferson to Henry Dearborn, Secretary of War, informs Dearborn of the creation of the rogue group and advises him to inform their commanding officer, General Mason, without naming Hanson as their informer. |
