Summary: This collection contains the papers of various members of the Houston, Brown, and allied families, mainly Charles Boone Houston I (1832-1902), Howard Hathaway Houston (1861-1929), Charles Boone Houston II (1890-1973), Margaret Houston Brown (1915-1987), Medford Jennings Brown (1884-1936), Charles Stuart Brown (1915-1993), and Bruce Maitland Brown (1947-2020). The Houston men were bankers and entrepreneurs in the coal, lumber, and steel industries of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Howard H. Houston served as mayor of the City of Chester. Medford Brown was president of a coal company, and his son Charles Stuart was manager of the advertising department at Avisco. Bruce Brown started his career in public relations with the Food and Drug Administration, but shifted professions midlife and spent the remainder of his career as a philanthropy consultant and a grantmaker. He established the HBE Foundation with his wife Elaine Eldrege Brown in 1987. The materials in the collection include personal papers, vital records, extensive correspondence, many photographs and scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and some artifacts. The majority of the material dates from the 20th century.
