Journals, 1799-1800, 1800-1801, contain notes of a journey from New England to Virginia, with details on facilities for travel, characteristics of the inhabitants of the states he traversed, their religious sentiments, education, sports, recreations, economic and social conditions. Also included is information on the political controversies agitating the period, particularly the election of Thomas Jefferson, and the contest between Democratic and Federalist factions.
