This is the record book of the Home Missionary Society for the city of Philadelphia containing information about visits to needy families.
There are over five thousand entries, arranged chronologically. Each entry contains the name of person visited, address, color (race), nativity (place of origin), religious denomination, number of people in the family, general remarks, and who recommended the visit. Also included in the entries are initials or name of person visiting them, date of visit, and relief afforded (coal, groceries, or clothing).
Most of the people visited were women, particularly single mothers or women whose husbands were sick, disabled or unemployed, though a few men were visited as well. |
