| 520 | |a The Rex Family Papers fall into two broad categories: Rex family history and the personal and professional papers of editor and author Barbara Clayton Rex. Those in the first part include genealogical materials, correspondence, and memorabilia of various members of the Rex family, beginning in the eighteenth century with Abraham Rex and continuing through the twentieth century. In addition, there are a few papers, photographs, and memorabilia documenting related families, including the Bakers, Tolberts, Emorys, Browns, and Claytons. The personal and professional papers of Barbara Clayton Rex are the primary focus of this collection. Barbara Clayton Rex (b. 1904) was an author, editor, and a close friend of Catherine Drinker Bowen, renowned historical biographer. The personal papers contain Rex's diaries (1920-1997) and extensive incoming personal correspondence from Bowen (1934-1973). The professional papers relate to Rex’s work as an editor and an author. These papers pertain primarily to her four published novels but also refer to her articles for magazines and her columns for several local newspapers. Unprocessed additions to the collection include a group of papers from the Estate of Walter Edwin (aka "Ted") Rex III (1927-2010), Barbara Clayton Rex's son. Walter was born in Philadelphia, attended Harvard University in the 1950s, and went on to teach French at the University of California - Berkeley for more than thirty years. Walter was also an accomplished cellist and author of several articles on French dramatics and literature. These papers of Walter E. Rex date from 1866 to 2010 and span 4 boxes and 4 loose envelopes (2.2 linear feet) include family history materials, many of which document the Rex family in Philadelphia; business and personal correspondence; photographs; and numerous copies of and notes on his articles. There are also papers documenting the history of his house in Berkeley, which had been destroyed by the Oakland-Berkeley fire of 1991 and he subsequently rebuilt; and some of Walter's course materials and notes he used throughout his teaching career. The papers are organized in labeled envelopes and a preliminary inventory is available. Date span, number of boxes, and lineage footage have been updated with new totals. | ||
