This collection consists of five scrapbooks that house envelopes, stationery, and songs, which were compiled by several different collectors. The material in these scrapbooks is primarily related to the Civil War, but there are also envelopes commemorating the Centennial celebration. There is one box of loose envelopes, which were produced during the Civil War. The Civil War envelopes celebrate the Union cause with patriotic imagery and slogans (flags, military insignias of various units, etc.), as well as biting political cartoons. Many of the cartoons caricature Jefferson Davis and other Confederate leaders, while some provide commentary on the system of slavery. Some of the envelopes take on the feel of fine art, with busts of military figures, maps, and battle scenes printed across the entire front side, while most envelopes have the imagery contained to the left hand side or top corner, leaving most of the front free to address the envelope. Some of the images are hand-tinted, while many are crudely printed with inaccurately registered layers of red and blue.
Some of the publishers represented in this collection include R.F. Clark, Waverly Book Store (Rochester), James Gates (Cincinnati), Francis & Loutrel (New York), G.W. Cottrell, D. Murphy's Son (New York), J. Magee, King & Baird, S.C. Upham, A.S. Robinson (Hartford), Joseph Mickley, Charles Magnus (New York), L. Prang (Boston), J.G. Wells, Allen & Boyer (New Orleans), Car Bell (Hartford), J.M. Whittemore (Boston), and New York Union Envelope Division.
The currency in this collection is primarily Union and Confederate money, but there are several bank notes from Cuba, as well as some pre-Civil War state currency. Also included in this collection are a number of tickets and passes for the 1900 Republican National Convention, which may have belonged to Hampton Carson. |
